The Dodge line of pickup trucks flew under the radar for decades until the Dodge Ram 1500 series was introduced in the mid 1990s. The handsome, big-rig styling and car-comfort in the cab, made the Dodge Ram a star. In 1998 it was the first half-ton pickup to offer a four-door body style. To change the exhaust manifold on the 1998 3.9L, 5.2L or 5.9L gas engine, follow these steps.

Instructions

Remove the Exhaust Manifold

    1

Purchase new gaskets before beginning. Raise the vehicle to facilitate access to the exhaust manifold. Make sure the supports are secure.

    2

Take the negative battery cable from the terminal. Check the manifolds and header pipes for any sensors. Disconnect any wiring that can interfere with removal. Label connections before separating them.

    3

Unbolt and remove the heat shield. Apply penetrating oil to the nuts on the exhaust pipe and manifold.

    4

Loosen the nuts and take the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold. Unbolt the exhaust manifold. Take the exhaust manifold from the engine. Remove the gasket and discard it.

Install the Exhaust Manifold

    5

Scrape any gasket material from the mating surfaces. Clean the surfaces with solvent to remove carbon deposits. Check the surfaces for damage.

    6

Position the new gasket on the head and then align the exhaust manifold over it. Apply an anti-seize compound the threads of the nuts and bolts to make future removal easier.

    7

Tighten the bolts and then tighten them in sequence, working out from the center. Torque the bolts to 18 foot pounds. Reconnect any sensors in the reverse order of their removal.

    8

Set the exhaust pipe in place and screw on the nuts by hand. Torque the nuts to 20 foot pounds.

    9

Attach the negative battery cable to the terminal. Start the engine and allow it to warm up.
