As of 2010, two-stage clear coat systems have effectively replaced traditional two-pack paint products. Although clear coats are more expensive than their predecessors, they offer a lasting shine and are noted for being hard-wearing and resilient to changing weather conditions.
Components
Modern developments in acrylic paint systems have seen the latest clear coats superseding urethane alternatives. They are easier to work with, can dry faster under low-bake oven conditions to increase workshop volumes and produce a harder finish that gives added protection to paintwork.
Application
Once a base color has been sprayed onto a vehicle, it is left to cure before a clear coat is added. The clear coat is usually administered in two full coats, although many of the modern HVLP systems can be sprayed in a single application. Clear coats provide a high-gloss finish and serve to protect the base color underneath.
Durability
Modern clear coats are preferred because of their durable qualities. They are able to withstand a variety of weather conditions and can easily cope with the perils of acidic rain and industrial fallout. Clear coats also contain UV blockers, which can stop paint from fading or weathering.
