The upper ball joints are an important component of your vehicle's suspension and steering systems. It is important to maintain and inspect your upper and lower ball joints to make sure they are working properly.

Instructions

    1

Secure the vehicle on a set of jack stands and remove the front wheels. Keep the lug nuts with the wheel from which they came to re-install correctly later. A magnetized tray is great for holding these items.

    2

Notice where the wheel connects to the steering knuckle. Follow the steering knuckle upward and you will find the upper ball joint pressed into the upper control arm. You may need to crawl under the vehicle or pull the fender out slightly to see the upper ball joints.

    3

Check the joints visually for any damage, excessive corrosion or other problems that could cause malfunction or accidents. If there is a problem, take it to a professional mechanic to have the damage corrected or the upper ball joints replaced. There is a special tool needed for the job that is expensive and not readily available to the at-home mechanic.
