The fuel injector in a Chevy Corvette mixes fuel with air under pressure and rendered carburetors obsolete during the late 1980s. A fuel injector has programmable firmware that allows the same hardware to handle different fuels. The fuel injector consists only of a nozzle and valve; it still requires a pump to deliver fuel into the engine.

Instructions

    1

Determine which fuel injector your Chevy Corvette will need. This depends not only on the make and model, but also the engine size. The first generation Corvette was made from 1953 to 1962 and was made with 235 cubic inch (ci), 265ci, 283ci and 327ci engines. The second generation Corvette was made from 1963 to 1967 and the base model had a 327ci engine with options for 396ci and 427ci.

    2

Look at engine sizes for later generations of the Corvette. The third generation covers 1968 to 1982 and the base model had a 5.7L engine with 7.0L or 7.4L engines available as options. The fourth and fifth generation of Corvette was made from 1984 to 2004 and came only with a 5.7L engine, but it was available in many different types and configurations.

    3

Check the engine size for the current Corvette. The base model has a 6.0L LS2 engine for 2005 to 2007 models and base models after 2007 have a 6.2L LS3 engine.

    4

Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench and relieve the fuel system pressure. Remove both fuel rail covers and detach the fuel send line from the fuel rail. Label the fuel injector electrical connectors before detaching them and remove the ground strap for the fuel rail from the intake manifold.

    5

Release the injector clip from the fuel rail and disconnect the fuel rail with a socket wrench so you can remove the fuel injector. Discard the retaining clip and all the O-ring seals.

    6

Install the new fuel injectors by reversing the removal procedure. Lubricate the new injector seals with clean oil and use a torque wrench to tighten the fuel rail attaching bolts to 89 inch pounds. Attach the electrical connectors to the injectors according to the labels you made earlier.
