The anti-lock braking system (ABS) controller for the Toyota Corolla reduces the braking force to any wheel that is rotating significantly more slowly than the others. This helps prevent the brakes from locking during an emergency stop. Your vehicle is not necessarily unsafe to drive if the ABS warning light comes on, but it may mean that you need to replace the ABS.

Instructions

    1

Determine which ABS controller your Toyota Corolla will need. You'll want to be sure the new controller is compatible with your make and model of Corolla. ABS was first offered as an option for the LE edition in 1998 and was standard for the Conquest edition beginning in 2001.

    2

Drain as much brake fluid as possible from the master cylinder reservoir using a syringe. Remove the tank for the windshield washer fluid and the wheel well housing to access the ABS controller.

    3

Disconnect the electrical connectors at the actuator and use tool 09751-36011 to disconnect the brake lines from the ABS controller. Release the brake line clamp from the strut tower.

    4

Remove the nuts and bolts that mount the ABS controller and bracket to the vehicle with a socket wrench. Remove the ABS controller with the attached bracket from the vehicle. Use a socket wrench to disconnect nuts that mount the ABS controller to its bracket.

    5

Install the new ABS controller by reversing the removal procedure. Use a torque wrench to tighten the nuts that mount the ABS controller to its bracket to 48 inch lbs. Torque the nuts that mount the ABS controller to the vehicle to 48 in. lbs. Torque the retaining bolts for the ABS controller bracket to 14 feet lbs. Tighten the brake line fittings to 11 feet lbs.
