PPG Automotive Paint Tips

Founded in 1883 as Pittsburgh Plate Glass, since 1924, PPG Industries has been a leading innovator in the development and manufacture of automotive paints and industrial coatings. Because of its longstanding reputation, the company publishes regular updates and application tips targeted toward its industrial customer audience.

Proper Use

PPG emphasizes that its automotive refinishing paints and coatings should only to be applied by trained professionals. PPG automotive paints are manufactured strictly for industrial use, not for sale to the general public. They should never be applied to ordinary household items such as furniture or toys.

Fire Safety Warnings

Many PPG Industries products contain volatile, highly flammable, solvents. It is critical that application and storage areas be properly constructed and ventilated and that smoking or any open flames are strictly forbidden. The company also recommends that every application site be equipped with fire extinguishers and other suppression systems. PPG further emphasizes that application facilities should be designed in accordance with guidelines established by the National Fire Protection Association and conform to all federal, state and local fire codes.

Equipment Recommendations

Most PPG refinishing products are designed for spray application. As such, if airless or electrostatic equipment is being used, the danger of static discharge and explosion can occur. Airless sprayers use a pump to force paint through a small nozzle which causes the material to atomize. PPG also warns that proper grounding and bonding practices must be observed and that the ventilation system should be regularly checked to ensure it is operating correctly. Lastly, the company recommends that paint spraying booths must meet both local and OSHA regulations regarding electrical equipment and air velocity. Spray booths are sequestered areas where automotive paint can be applied under controlled atmospheric conditions and temperatures.

Spontaneous Combustion

PPG also warns its customers to avoid situations which may lead to spontaneous combustion. This phenomena occurs when rapid oxidation produces more heat than the surrounding atmosphere can dissipate and the resulting heat causes materials to self-ignite. Because many PPG products contain resins, linseed oil and drying agents, the company recommends careful storage and prompt disposal of any rags saturated with its products. PPG's Safety Data Sheets and product labels or container information clearly list all recommended disposal practices.

Training

PPG has established a training facility where its customers can test new products, application techniques, equipment, understand risk management and improve business efficiency. PPG understands that better trained and educated customers have much higher rates of success, productivity, profitability and satisfaction. The overall goal is to transform its customers into enthusiastic advocates of PPG products.

Free Product Advice

PPG manufactures a wide variety of automotive paints, but not every product is suitable for every application. To ensure every customer acquires the correct ones, the company offers free selection advice.
