All of the Nissan Maxima models equipped with a gasoline engine are also equipped with spark plugs. These spark plugs need to be inspected every 30,000 to 45,000 miles and need to be changed every 100,000 miles. The Nissan Maxima engine has the same number of spark plugs as the engine has cylinders.

Instructions

    1

Label the spark plug wires with numbered pieces of masking tape. The spark plug wires are located at either the front and back or the sides of the engine. Allow the engine time to cool down before doing anything with the spark plugs.

    2

Grab the boot of the spark plug wire and twist the wire from left to right to release the locking mechanism. Pull back on the wire once the lock releases.

    3

Unscrew the old spark plug from the engine with the socket and wrench. Turn the socket to the left until the spark plug is completely removed from the cylinder well.

    4

Apply anti-seize or silicone spray to the threads of the new spark plug and inside the boot of the spark plug wire.

    5

Screw the new spark plug into the cylinder well by hand. Gently turn the spark plug into place.

    6

Use the tension tester tool to check the torque of the spark plug. Most Nissan Maxima spark plugs require between 14 and 22 foot pounds. This varies by model or by spark plug manufacturer. Refer to the spark plug's packaging for the required torque.

    7

Place the spark plug wire onto the spark plug that corresponds with the matching number you tagged in Step 1. Continue to replace the other spark plugs until the job is complete.
