How to Change Headlights on a Chevrolet Lumina

Of all the safety features built into todays automobiles, perhaps none is more basic than the headlights. They are taken for granted until one burns out. Fortunately, replacing the bulb in a headlight is one job most do-it-yourselfers can easily handle, and it wont cost an arm and a leg.

How to Change the Headlights on a 1996 Chevrolet Lumina Sedan

Unlatch hood by pulling the hood release lever located below the dash to the left of the driver. Walk to the front of the car. Locate the safety catch under the center of the hood and release it. Raise the hood.

Turn on your headlights by turning the headlight switch, located on the dash to the left of the steering wheel, clockwise two notches. Walk to the front of the car and observe which bulb is burned out. Return to the driver's seat and turn on the high beams by toggling the high-low beam switch. Walk to the front of the car and again observe which bulb is burned out. Return to the driver's seat and turn off the headlights.

Position yourself in front of the headlamp with the burned out bulb. Observe where the electrical connectors attach to the bulb that needs replacing. Reach behind the headlamp housing, grasp the connector housing, and twist it clockwise one quarter of a turn until the bulb is unlocked from its housing.

Gently angle the bulb out of the headlamp housing. Lift the tab on the top of the electrical connector and work the bulb loose from the connection. Set the old bulb aside for disposal.

Push the new bulb into place in the electrical connector until the tab snaps into place. Angle the new bulb back into the headlamp housing. Align the connector housing with the headlamp housing and twist it counter-clockwise, locking the bulb into place.
