How to Install an Auto Side Mirror

You may have a number of reasons to install a new side mirror on your vehicle. The old one may have been damaged or broken off altogether, or you may want to replace it with your own aftermarket version. In any case, the exact method of how the side mirror is installed will vary depending on the year, make and model of the vehicle. Some cars also have only one mirror on the driver's side while others have a second one on the passenger's side.

Instructions

    1

Disconnect the trim piece on the inside of the door opposite the current mirror. This piece may be clipped on and removed by hand or with a trim stick, or you may need to remove a screw. On some models, you might need to remove the main door trim panel first.

    2

Detach the manual adjustment lever by turning its rubber boot to disengage it from the bezel. If the mirror uses electric controls, disconnect the electrical connector; disconnect the vehicle's negative battery cable first.

    3

Remove the mounting fasteners for the old mirror and remove it from the outside of the door. It may use screws that require a Phillips screwdriver or bolts that require a ratchet wrench, usually with a 3/8 inch socket.

    4

Mount the new side mirror in place on its mount. Use the old fasteners to secure it on the door unless the mirror comes with its own fasteners; check with your mechanic to see which fasteners work best in that case.

    5

Reconnect the control to the mirror, be it the electrical connector or manual lever. For manual controls, reconnect the battery cable, turn the car on and test the adjustment switch.

    6

Reconnect the trim piece to the mirror followed by the main door trim panel if needed.
