How to Replace the Ignition Coil in a Hyundai Santa Fe

The Hyundai Santa Fe uses a distributorless ignition system (DIS) in all its engine types. Without a distributor to host the ignition system, Hyundai mounts the ignition coil directly to the engine. The Santa Fe ignition coil, often referred to as an ignition coil pack, requires less work to remove than an ignition coil located in a distributor.

Disconnect the battery. To do this, simply remove the negative battery cable from the terminal and isolate it.

Access the ignition coil back by removing the engine cover.

Find where the spark plug wires attach to the Santa Fe ignition coil. Remove both the wires. You may need to squeeze the boot of the wires or push down on a safety clip to remove them. Some people find it helpful to mark the spark plug wires with masking tape to identify which wire goes where.

Loosen the connectors that hold the ignition coil in place with a screwdriver or small wrench.

Pull out the ignition coil. You may need to twist slightly as you pull up to dislodge the ignition coil from the engine.

Insert a universal or a stock replacement Santa Fe ignition coil into the engine and mount it using the connectors.

Reattach the spark plug wires in the proper location and put the ignition coil back on.
