How to Replace the Oil Pan Gasket in a Ford F-Series

If you've noticed a puddle of oil under your Ford F-Series truck, it may be an indication that the oil pan gasket is leaking and needs to be replaced. Changing the oil pan gasket can be difficult and on some models, the engine will need to be lifted to provide access to the oil pan. However, some models are more accessible. Here's how to change the oil pan gasket in a 1997 to 2003 model Ford F-150.

Raise the truck with jacks and support it safely on jack stands. Block the rear wheels as an added safety measure. If your truck is a 4X4, remove the front axle housing.

Locate the drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan and place a large bucket under the plug. Remove the drain plug with a socket wrench and let the oil drain into the bucket.

Remove the 16 bolts holding the oil pan in place and carefully lower the oil pan. Scrape off the old gasket carefully with a thin putty knife or a similar tool and wipe the joining surface with engine cleaner.

Attach a new oil pan gasket, reposition the oil pan and torque the bolts according to specifications. Replace the drain plugand if you removed the front axle housing, replace it now.

Lower the truck carefully and remove the jack stand. Fill the engine with about 6.5 qt. of fresh oil. Check the level with a dipstick and add more oil if necessary. Ford F-150 models require between 6.5 and 7 qt. of oil.

Funnel the old oil into an empty milk carton and dispose of it properly at a garage or at your neighborhood hazardous waste facility.
