How to Remove a Caliper Mounting Bracket

Do-it-yourself auto repair can save you time, money and the hassle of taking your car to a professional mechanic. The brakes are the most important system in your car and should be maintained often and replaced as necessary. Removing the caliper mounting bracket is part of this process.

Secure the car on a set of jack stands. Use a floor jack to raise the vehicle and place the jack stands under the control arms and framing of the car. Give the car a little shake to make sure it's not going anywhere before you start.

Remove the wheel by first removing the lug nuts and placing them on a magnetic tray to avoid losing them. Then lift the wheel off the hub and set it aside. Notice where the caliper and caliper bridge are located.

Disassemble the caliper by removing the mounting bolts and sliding the caliper up and off. Let it hang out of the way. Remove the brake pads by lifting them straight out or sliding them out the side. Pay attention to where each pad came from in order to properly clean and reuse each.

Break loose the mounting bolts and ratchet them all the way off. Remember to keep the lock washer with the bolt. Set these on a magnetic tray to avoid losing them. Once the bolts are removed, you can lift the caliper mounting brackets out of place.
