The rear hatch on a 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe has a release mechanism that connects to the latch and keeps the door shut. If this hatch release fails, then the rear of the Tahoe won't be able to open up. Similarly, if your rear hatch release is sticking, then it may be a sign that release failure is on the way. Replacing the rear hatch release should take about an hour to do.

Instructions

    1

Open up the hatch. Push in the small push pins located next to the hatch with the small blade flathead screwdriver, then remove the rest of the clips holding the panel to the hatch using the interior trim panel removal tool. Pull the panel off of the rear hatch.

    2

Remove the c-clip holding the release cable to the rear hatch release using the small blade flathead screwdriver. Unplug the wiring to the hatch with your hands. Unbolt the rear hatch release from the hatch with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, then remove it from the hatch.

    3

Put the replacement rear hatch release into the factory location and bolt it in place using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Reinstall the cable with the c-clip and the small blade flathead screwdriver, and plug the wiring back in place.

    4

Push the trim panel onto the rear hatch with your hands. Push in the rear push pins from the panel around the hatch latch with your hands. Shut the hatch.
