Your 1999 to 2001 model Chevy Camaro offers outstanding performance, good fuel economy, mechanical reliability, cargo capacity, smooth handling and style. Add the ability to go from zero to 60 in 5.5 seconds and you have an impressive car and fun ownership experience. The secret to keeping it performing at its best is to perform the scheduled maintenance. One form of this scheduled maintenance is to replace the front disc brakes.

Instructions

    1

Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Remove the master cylinder reservoir cap. Siphon brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir until it is approximately one third full by using a syringe, like a turkey baster. Loosen the lug nuts. Slowly jack the vehicle up. Safely support the front of the vehicle securely on jackstands .

    2

Remove the wheel and tire assembly. Tighten the lug nut, using your hand, to temporarily secure the rotor. Install a C-clamp over the brake caliper body positioning the C-clamp against the caliper body.

    3

Compress the caliper pistons into the caliper bores by tightening the C-clamp. Once this has been achieved, remove the C-clamp. Remove the upper brake caliper guide pin bolt.

    4

Using mechanic's wire, support the brake caliper so that it does not dangle from the brake hose, as this may result in the brake hose being damaged. Remove the brake pads.

    5

Ensure that there is no damage to the caliper slide boots. Bottom the piston into the caliper using a large C-clamp positioned on the housing and inside the piston well. Lift the inner edge of the boot next to the piston and press out any trapped air. Ensure that the boot is flat.

    6

Install the inner pad assembly by positioning the retainer spring into the piston. Ensure that the boot and the pad do not touch. If they do then reposition them. Install the outer pad assembly. Ensure that the back of the pad is flat against the caliper. If the wear sensor is not at the trailing lower edge of the outer pad during forward wheel rotation than the outer pad is installed incorrectly and needs to be reinstalled. Reconnect the caliper assembly to the rotor and mounting bracket. Reinstall the wheel.

    7

Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery. Start the engine and pump the brake pedal slowly and firmly for 3 to 4 times to seat the brake pads. Test that the maintenance was performed correctly by driving the Camaro around at slow to moderate speeds.
