Installing a new fuel tank in a Mitsubishi Galant is fairly straightforward, but the key is to be aware of safety at all times. If you take your time and observe all safety measures, you can save money by installing a new fuel tank yourself. Here's how to install a new tank in a 1999 to 2003 model Mitsubishi Galant.

Instructions

    1

Relieve the pressure from the fuel tank and disconnect the negative battery cable before you begin. Raise the vehicle with a jack and support it safely on a jack stand. Drain the fuel into a gas can.

    2

Take off the wheel well liner on the left rear of the vehicle, and disconnect the exhaust system from the muffler. Unhook the exhaust hangers, and lower the exhaust enough to set it aside. If your Galant has four-wheel steering, unscrew the mounting bolts and lower the steering gear on the rear of the vehicle.

    3

Disconnect the return hose, vapor hose and high pressure hose from the fuel pump and unhook the electrical connectors at the pump. Disconnect the vent hoses and filler hoses.

    4

Put a floor jack under the middle of the fuel tank and raise it up slightly, enough to remove the nuts on the retaining strap. Lower the tank enough to detach any remaining hoses or electrical connectors on the tank.

    5

Remove the tank carefully from the vehicle. Put the new tank on the floor jack and put it in position under the vehicle. Transfer hoses and electrical connectors from the old tank to the new tank, and then raise the tank into place.

    6

Replace the retainer straps around the fuel tank, install new self-locking nuts and tighten them securely. Connect the high pressure and return hoses and install the vapor hose. If your Galant has four-wheel steering, reinstall the steering unit and tighten the bolts according to specifications.

    7

Reconnect the exhaust pipe and connectors, and reinstall the rear well liner, if necessary. Lower the vehicle carefully and reconnect the negative battery cable. Check to make sure the fuel pump has the proper pressure and check the system for leaks.
