A badly corroded muffler can leak exhaust and create health and environmental hazards. You will need to remove the muffler for replacement, or if you have to work on any other components of the exhaust system. The muffler is mounted to the body through brackets, and removing it on the 1999 Forrd Expedition is much like on any vehicle. Don't remove the muffler until the exhaust system is cool.

Instructions

    1

Raise the vehicle on its rear end using a floor jack. Lower it onto jack stands for support.

    2

Apply penetrating oil to all of the muffler's mounting fasteners and wait for it to settle in.

    3

Remove the nuts connecting the muffler flange to the rest of the exhaust system, using a wrench.

    4

Unscrew and remove the fasteners connecting the muffler to its mounting brackets while a second person supports the muffler at the flange end.

    5

Lower and remove the muffler out of the mounting brackets and off of the Expedition.
