How to Install Windshield Wipers

Windshield wipers are one of the things in life that you don't realize you need until they are broken, cracked or just useless in moving water off your windshield. Installing windshield wipers is a quick process, so don't wait for an emergency.

Check the wipers to see if the blade or the entire wiper needs to be replaced. Some types of windshield wipers allow you to slide in new blades if just the rubber part of the wiper is damaged. Other types must be replaced entirely.

Visit your auto supply store and look up the size of wiper you need to install. The size will depend on the year, make and model of your car.

Lay out your supplies on a blanket on top of your hood.

Lift the wiper arm up so that you can work with it. With some vehicles, it's easier to move the arms to a higher position to install the wiper. If so, turn on your car to turn on the wipers, and turn off the car when they are in the desired position.

Pinch down on the wiper where it connects to the arm to release the blade, then slide out the blade. Different brands of wipers are released differently, though pinching is the most common method.

Install your new windshield wipers according to the manufacturer's instructions. Lock all hardware into place so that the wiper stays put and no metal scratches on your window. Test them before you drive away.
