There are several different kinds of fuel injectors for different kinds of diesel injection systems. Some engines use a direct injection system, which forces the fuel directly into the combustion chamber. But some engines use an indirect injection system, which sprays into an ante-chamber before exploding in the main combustion chamber.

Instructions

    1

Get a copy of a repair manual from a company, like Haynes, for your vehicle. Make sure it includes the right make, model and year as well as the diesel engine rather than the gasoline engine. Borrow one from someone else you know who has the same or a similar car, if you don't want to buy one yourself.

    2

Look up the fuel injector specifications. There might be a picture of it in the manual. It tells you exactly which part it is and what to look for to make sure you're getting the right kind of fuel injector. It explains whether the system is a direct or indirect injection system. It also tells you whether you need to buy brackets or bolts that don't come with the part.

    3

Use the manual to disassemble your diesel engine and look at the fuel injectors. They might have buildup on them or be inconvenient to reach. If so, move on to Step 4.

    4

Go to the automotive parts store or the dealership where you bought your car and ask to look at the diesel fuel injector for your car straight from the box. Some dealerships aren't as helpful as the auto parts store when it comes to looking at and buying parts rather than repair. Don't let them talk you into having them rip your engine apart and charging you an arm and a leg.
