How to Disassemble a Gravity Fed Paint Gun

Achieve consistently perfect paint finishes by stripping and cleaning gravity-fed spray guns on a regular basis. Gravity-fed spray guns have replaced suction-fed models as the tool of choice for vehicle refinishing specialists. When spray guns become dirty, paint residues contaminate the chambers and flecks of foreign materials are distributed into the paintwork. Stripping a gravity-spray gun requires no special tools and can be completed within minutes

Instructions

    1

Make sure the gravity-fed spray gun is empty before stripping begins. Firmly grip the top of the paint storage pot and twist counterclockwise to loosen it from the spray gun assembly. Continue twisting until the pot is completely removed. Remove the lid from the paint storage pot and immerse both parts in cellulose thinners to remove paint build-up.

    2

Remove the air cap by twisting it counterclockwise. Turn the gun assembly around and loosen the needle adjustment screw. Take care not to lose the spring as the needle adjustment screw is removed. Pinch the end of the fluid needle between your thumb and forefinger and pull it out of the spray gun. Soak the removed parts in cellulose thinners.

    3

Place a 10mm wrench over the face of the fluid tip before twisting it counterclockwise to break the seal. Use your thumb and forefinger to completely twist the fluid tip out of position and soak the component thoroughly. Put the baffle seal to one side to be used again when the spray gun is refitted. Use the sides of your thumb and forefinger to clamp around the edges of the baffle assembly and pull it out of the head of the spray gun. Soak the component in thinnner.

    4

Use an 8mm wrench to twist off the spreader valve assembly. Pull the components apart and allow to soak. Turn the spray gun assembly around and use the same wrench to remove the air valve assembly. Take care not to lose the small components inside the air valve assembly as they are being released. Soak the components at the same time to keep them together.

    5

Place a 13mm wrench around the air inlet nipple before turning it counterclockwise. Continue turning until the air inlet nipple releases from the spray gun assembly. Use a screwdriver to release the spray gun trigger and stud. Put all of the components into thinner to soak.
