The ignition coil converts the low-voltage power from the battery into the high-voltage spark that triggers the spark plugs. Signs of a damaged ignition coil include oil leaks, failure to start, irregular or fast idle or stalling. All Saturn engines utilize a distributorless ignition system (DIS) to provide the spark that creates air/fuel combustion.

Instructions

    1

Set the emergency brake and disconnect the negative battery cable, which connects to the negative terminal post, from the battery.

    2

Take off the air induction resonator.

    3

Release the electrical ignition (EI) module harness connector. With a small wrench or a socket set, remove the bolts for the upper and lower EI. Then pull out the EI module.

    4

Remove the spark plug wires from the ignition coil tower. To do this, gently pry between the EI module and the black CPA. A flat head screwdriver works great to do this.

    5

Rotate the Ion ignition coil as you pull upward to remove the old ignition coil.

    6

Install the new Ion ignition coil. You need to ensure the boot makes a proper seal for the ignition coil to work correctly.

    7

Put the parts back in their proper places and attach them. Tighten so the fasteners are snug.
