The anti-lock braking system (ABS) controller on the Kia Spectra prevents the brakes from locking during an emergency stop. The ABS controller reduces the braking force to any wheel that is rotating significantly more slowly than the others. If the ABS warning light comes on, you may need to replace the ABS, although this does not necessarily make your vehicle unsafe to drive.

Instructions

    1

Determine which ABS controller your Kia Spectra will need. You'll want to be sure the new controller is compatible with your make and model of Spectra. All versions of the Spectra have been equipped with ABS since its debut in 2000. The ABS controller is an integrated part of the hydraulic control unit in these models.

    2

Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. Pull on the lock for electrical connector to detach it from the ABS controller. Remove the brake lines from the ABS controller with a flare nut wrench to avoid stripping the flare nuts.

    3

Plug the open brake lines to prevent brake fluid from leaking. Remove the nuts and bolts on the hydraulic control unit bracket with a socket wrench so you can detach the hydraulic control unit from your vehicle.

    4

Install the new hydraulic control unit with ABS controller and tighten the retaining nuts and bolts with a socket wrench. Connect the brake lines to the hydraulic control unit and attach its electrical connector. Bleed the brake system and connect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench.

Connect the brake lines to the hydraulic control unit and attach its electrical connector. Bleed the brake system and connect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench.

    6

Start the engine and ensure the ABS light is not on. Make sure the ABS light does not come on while driving, especially during braking.
