The anti-lock braking system (ABS) on the Nissan Maxima prevents the brakes from locking during an emergency stop. The ABS controller does this by reducing the braking force to any wheel that is rotating significantly more slowly than the others. The ABS warning light may mean you need to replace the ABS controller. However, a non-functioning ABS does not necessarily mean your vehicle is unsafe to drive.

Instructions

    1

Determine which ABS controller your Nissan Maxima will need. You'll want to be sure the new controller is compatible with your make and model of Maxima. ABS was first featured on the Maxima in 1985.

    2

Drain the brake fluid system and discharge the air conditioning refrigerant. Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench and remove the windshield wiper and its linkage assembly.

    3

Disconnect both the high and low pressure air conditioning pipes so that you can access the ABS actuator and controller. Remove the electrical harness connectors from the ABS assembly.

    4

Detach the brake lines and remove the mounting bolts from the ABS assembly with a socket wrench.

    5

Install the new ABS controller. Fasten the mounting bolts and the brake lines with a socket wrench. Connect the electrical harness connectors to the ABS assembly and attach the air conditioning pipes. Install the windshield wiper assembly and connect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench.

    6

Refill the brake fluid and bleed the air from the brake system. Evacuate and recharge the air conditioning system.
