Your Mazda 6 has an electric cooling fan and one of two engine sizes. These steps address the 2.3L (L3) engine and can be accomplished by a beginner with a wrench in about an hour. The 3.0L (Aj) engine requires a slightly more complicated procedure to replace the engine fan.

Instructions

    1

Disconnect the negative battery cable on your Mazda 6, then unbolt and remove the fan shroud (housing) panel.

    2

Remove the cooler pipe stay and, if your vehicle has an automatic transmission, disconnect the oil hose stay as well. Then unplug the fan motor's electric connector from the wiring harness and disconnect the wiring harness from the fan shroud. Disconnect the coolant reservoir hose from the radiator.

    3

Loosen and remove the mountain bolts in order to lift the fan assembly out of the engine compartment and replace the fan motor and blades if necessary. You may also replace the entire unit.

    4

Place the new fan assembly, or the old fan assembly with new parts, back into the engine compartment and bolt it into place.

    5

Connect the coolant reservoir hose to the radiator and plug the electric fan back into its connector. Reattach the wiring harness to the fan shroud if it was originally connected.

    6

Replace the oil hose stay if you have an automatic transmission, and replace the cooler pipe stay and shroud panel.

    7

Reconnect the negative battery cable; check for coolant leaks and proper fan operation.
