The Pontiac Grand Am came on the scene in the 1970s, but it wasn't until the 1980s when it became the Pontiac of choice for new-car buyers. It was affordable, attractive and offered a nice array of options. The last generation of Grand Am was produced from 1999 through 2005 with either an economical 2.4L four-cylinder or the more powerful 3.4L V6.

Instructions

    1

Disconnect the battery ground and then isolate it so that it cannot make accidental contact with the terminal. Wait at least two minutes so the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) (air bag system) has sufficient time to disarm.

    2

Take off the lower and upper steering column covers. Locate the electrical connector behind the combination switch and disconnect it.

    3

Remove the screws that hold the combination switch in place on the adapter collar on the steering column. Take the combination switch off the collar.

    4

Position a new combination switch on the adapter collar. Secure the combination switch with the mounting screws. Plug the electrical connector into the combination switch.

    5

Put the upper and lower steering column covers in place. Tighten the screws.

    6

Attach the negative battery cable to the terminal. Turn the ignition to the ON position and wait at least three minutes for the air bag system to rearm.

    7

Start the engine. Check the turn signals and hazard flashers to assure that they are working properly.
