Part of the process of replacing a head gasket is replacing the other parts that go with it. Doing this will ensure that everything will work properly and avoid damaging the new parts you install. The valve cover bolts are included in those parts you want to replace.

Instructions

    1

Replace the head gasket, then move on to the rest of the re-installation process. This will include torquing down your valve cover. Place the valve cover in the place where it goes making sure to line up the bolt holes. Gather the bolts to put back into the valve cover.

    2

Place the bolts into their positions using your hand to tighten them down slightly to hold them into place. It is important to make sure they all start threading correctly to avoid a problem when you torque them down. Using your hand is a good way to get a feel for the bolt going into place properly.

    3

Use a torque wrench with the appropriate attachment to start torquing the bolts down. This needs to be done in a particular pattern to ensure the valve cover fits snugly and flat. Start with the center bolt if your valve cover has one. Use a star pattern from the center of the valve cover working your way out, tightening the bolts down.

    4

Continue this back and forth pattern until all of the bolts are in place. The number and locations of the bolts will differ based on the make, model and year of your vehicle. Consult your vehicle's repair manual for more specific information.
