How to Repair a Door Hinge on an S10

The door hinges on a Chevy S10 truck are welded into place on both the door and the body. Most forms of repair on the door hinges will require professional help. The one task you can complete yourself is if the hinge pins connecting the two parts of each hinge need replacing. Replacing the hinges remains a difficult task that will likely require at least two people to perform, unless you have a workshop with the capability of supporting the door from the ceiling.

Instructions

    1

Open the door, raise a floor jack underneath to support it and tie it to a roof truss with a chain. If the chain is not possible, have a second person hold onto the door.

    2

Connect a spring compressor tool to the hinge spring and use it to compress the spring and remove it from the door.

    3

Remove the clips on the hinge pins with pliersthere is a clip at each pin's "pointed" end, meaning the top of the lower pin and the bottom of the upper pin.

    4

Drive each pin out of its hinge with a punch and hammer, striking the pins at their points. Drive the lower hinge pin down and out of its hinge and drive the upper one up and out.

    5

Install the replacement pins into the hinges with the punch and hammer, driving the upper pin down into the hinge first and then driving the lower pin up into the hinge.

    6

Connect the clips onto the points of the pins with the pliers, using the replacement clips that should come with the pins.

    7

Reinstall the hinge spring carefully within the door using the compressor tool.

    8

Release the door from the support chain (if equipped) and floor jack and close the door.
