The 2005 Mazda 6 is part of the first-generation Mazda 6 family. The Mazda 6 was introduced for the 2003 model year. Production of the first-generation model continued until 2009, when it was replaced by the second-generation Mazda 6. The process for removing the center console is the same in all first-generation models. Common reasons for removing the center console include replacement of the car's carpeting, installation or modification of the gear shaft, or routing of audio equipment wires beneath the console.

Instructions

    1

Ensure the parking brake is set. Open the hood and loosen the negative battery cable nut with a wrench. Remove the cable from the battery post.

    2

Grip the gearshift knob firmly. Turn it counterclockwise to unscrew it from the gearshift. Set it aside.

    3

Open the cup holder door. Grasp the rear part of the cup holder and pull it up firmly to unhook it from the console. Set the cup holder assembly aside.

    4

Pry off the plastic screw caps from the front part of the console---one from each side---to reveal Phillips screws. Remove the Phillips screws.

    5

Slide both front seats as far forward as possible to gain access to the rear part of the console. Move to the back seat. Remove two more screw caps---one from each side of the rear part of the console---remove the Phillips screws they cover.

    6

Open the storage lid. Lift out the felt liner. Remove two additional Phillips screws.

    7

Unplug the two connections on the front part of the console using your fingers.

    8

Unplug the single connection on the rear part of the console by depressing the connection tab with needle-nose pliers.

    9

Lift the console up to take it out of the Mazda 6.
