The ubiquitous VW Beetle is one of the most popular cars of all time. Due to the difference in design between the old and new VW Beetles, the following are the steps for replacing the springs in the new VW Beetle. The steps for replacing the front springs and the rear springs are nearly identical.

Instructions

Removing the Springs and Strut Components

    1

Jack up the Beetle, and secure the wheels with jack stands. Use a floor jack beneath the rear axle for support.

    2

Remove the bolts from the top of the strut tower and take the strut assembly off the Beetle. This step will be slightly different for the front and rear springs. The rear spring mounting may be accessed through the trunk, depending upon the model year or special edition.

    3

Attach the spring compressor to a vise and attach the strut to the compressor. Use cloth or wood to prevent damage to the strut.

    4

Take off the cap on the mounting bolt. Compress the spring and remove the piston rod's self-locking nut. Mark the exact location of the retainer and spring mount in order to properly reinstall.

    5

Take the spring seat and remaining components off the strut assembly and remove the strut from the compressor. Take the spring off the compressor. This step can be dangerous if the spring is not removed cautiously.

    6

Inspect the strut components for signs of wear and replace the old spring with a new one.

Replacing the Springs and Strut Components

    7

Fasten the new spring securely in the spring compressor.

    8

Compress the spring and put the strut onto the compressor by inserting it through the spring. Use caution when compressing the spring. Make sure the spring is securely fastened before compressing it.

    9

Reinstall the spring seat and strut components onto the strut assembly.

    10

Replace the self-locking nut and install the mounting bolt cap.

    11

Remove the strut assembly and new spring from the spring compressor. Install the strut assembly onto the VW Beetle.

    12

Lower the Beetle and perform a safety check before taking it on the road.
