If you own a 1997 Chevy Camaro you know how important it is to keep up the maintenance on it. The thing you'll need to replace is the valve cover gasket. This will prevent you from experiencing oil leaks, smoke coming form your engine and your check oil light from coming on.

Instructions

    1

Find a location that will permit you to do repairs on the Chevy Camaro. Park the car and allow it to cool for a couple of hours. Lift the hood and disconnect the negative battery connection. Locate the valve cover and disconnect the spark plug wires from their connectors.

    2

Locate the right valve cover and remove the EGR valve from the exhaust manifold. Locate and remove the belt and the alternator rear brace. Move the alternator, placing it out of your way. Using the torque wrench, remove the valve cover bolts.

    3

Detach the valve cover. This may take a little effort if the valve cover is stuck. Be careful not to bend the valve cover when removing it or it will not fit properly when you put it back. Lift out the old gasket. You may need to nudge it with a screwdriver to encourage it to come out, but do so gently.

    4

Clean the gasket seating area with a scrub brush and automotive cleaner. Once you have removed all sealants, oil and other particles that may have been left from the old gasket, place the new gasket in the gasket seating area. Replace the gasket cover and using the torque wrench tighten the bolts in sequence. Be careful not to over tighten the bolts or the gasket will not fit correctly.

    5

Reverse the steps used to remove the parts to put everything back. Once the parts are back in place, add oil to the engine and allow it to run idle for a while. This will allow the oil to move to the head, lubricating the engine.
