The fuel injector in a Dodge Caravan mixes fuel with air under pressure and rendered carburetors obsolete during the late 1980s. A fuel injector has programmable firmware that allows the same hardware to handle different fuels. The fuel injector consists only of a nozzle and valve; it still requires a pump to deliver fuel into the engine.

Instructions

    1

Determine which fuel injector your Dodge Caravan will need. This depends not only on the make and model, but also the engine size. Models for 2001 to 2007 may have a 2.4L EDZ, 3.3L EGA or 3.8L EGH engine. Models after 2007 have a 3.3L EGA, 3.8L EGH or 4.0 L engine.

    2

Relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. Remove the upper intake manifold and detach the fuel lines from the chassis tube by disconnecting the quick connect fittings.

    3

Remove the fuel rail mounting bolts with a socket wrench and lift out the fuel rail with the injectors still attached. Rotate the injectors and remove them from the fuel rail. Discard the old O-ring seals.

    4

Install the new fuel injectors with new O-ring seals. Use a torque wrench to tighten the fuel rail bolts to 16 foot pounds. Connect the quick connect fittings on the fuel lines to attach them to the chassis tube and replace the upper intake manifold. Connect the negative battery cable.

    5

Start the engine and check for fuel leaks.
