Mercury Villager models between 1993 and 1998 require spark plug replacement every 20,000 and 30,000 miles. In Mercury Villager models manufactured after 1999 the suggested interval between spark plug replacement is 105,000 miles. Replacing the spark plugs in a Mercury Villager takes approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour once the engine cools.

Instructions

    1

Raise the hood and allow the engine to cool. If spark plugs are removed from a warm engine, serious damage to the engine will occur.

    2

Remove the black negative battery cable from the battery.

    3

Locate the spark plug wires on the sides of the engine about a quarter of the way down the engine.

    4

Turn the spark plug wire by the boot of the wire to release the lock. Pull up on the wire to remove it from the spark plug.

    5

Remove the spark plug with the socket and socket wrench. Use a socket extension if the spark plug does not have direct access. Remove any debris from the inside of the spark plug wire with the wire brush.

    6

Rub anti-seize compound on the threads of the spark plug and on the inside of the wire boot.

    7

Thread the spark plug into the well by hand. If this is not possible because of the plug's location, use the socket and extension instead. Do not use the socket wrench as the shear force of the wrench damages the spark plug.

    8

Reconnect the spark plug cable and repeat the process for the remaining spark plugs. Reconnect the battery cable after you complete the process.
