The Subaru Outback was billed as the first sports utility wagon. The stylish Outback offers performance and a versatile design. The coils are incorporated into the struts to give the Outback good handling and load capacity. Replacing the springs in the Subaru Outback can be accomplished by any experienced mechanic. The steps for both rear and front spring replacement require removal of the struts.

Instructions

    1

Securely block the wheels with jack stands and raise if necessary before removing the strut from the Outback.

    2

Put the strut into a vise, making sure not to crimp the metal, and install a spring compressor.

    3

Compress the spring slightly in order to loosen the bearing cap locknut. Compress the spring further to remove the locknut. This is potentially dangerous as the spring holds a great deal of energy which must be released carefully.

    4

Remove the following: strut bearing cap, mounting insulator bracket and upper spring seat, and spring assembly (with the spring compressed). Inspect and remove the strut boot and rebound bumper, strut retainer but and strut insert.

    5

Reinstall and connect the strut into the chamber and install the retainer nut before tightening to manufacturer's specifications.

    6

Reattach the rebound bumper and boot onto the strut's piston rod before positioning the spring on the lower bracket along with the upper spring seat, insulator and bearing cap. Tighten the locknut.

    7

Remove the spring compressor carefully and install the strut onto the Outback.
