How to Adjust the Headlights in a Lincoln Navigator

In an SUV like the Lincoln Navigator, the headlight trajectory path is an important element in driving safety. The headlights on the Navigator hit higher on oncoming cars, and the wrong angle can blind other drivers.

Put your SUV in normal driving condition. This includes the amount of cargo, the amount of fuel and the proper tire pressure.

Pull your Lincoln Navigator so the headlights face a wall or garage door. You want to be within 5 feet. The area should be level.

Mark the center point for the headlights on the wall using a two pieces of masking tape to make a cross.

Back up to a distance of 15 to 25 feet away from the wall or garage door and park your Lincoln Navigator. Set your emergency brake as an extra safety measure. If you plan to adjust your headlights outside, wait until dark.

Open the hood and locate the headlight adjustments screws. You'll find these on the rear of the headlight housing. One is inboard and the other outboard.

Turn on the headlights. Keep an eye on the amount of time you leave your headlights on-you don't want to drain your battery.

Use a wrench or a pair of pliers to turn the screws until the headlights hit the marks on the wall. Turn clockwise to raise the headlights and counterclockwise to lower them. Adjust each headlight individually. The low beams should fall within a 2-inch variance of the center mark, and the high beams should rest in the center of the mark.
