Before you can replace a Cadillac Escalade ignition coil, you need to identify whether your model has one. Most models with a 4.8L, 5.3L, 5.7L, 7.4L or 8.1L engine use a distributor ignition system, which relies on an ignition coil to trigger the spark plugs.

Instructions

    1

Ensure your safety by disconnecting the negative battery cable from the battery before working on your Cadillac Escalade. This prevents sparks caused when metal touches the engine.

    2

Access the ignition coil by removing the nut and the air cleaner assembly with a wrench. Then, remove the spark plug wires from the Cadillac Escalade ignition coil, which is in the distributor. Disconnect the ignition coil harness electrical connectors.

    3

Separate the ignition coil from the bracket. To do this, remove the studs that hold the bracket to the intake manifold. Two rivets secure the bracket to the ignition coil; you need to drill and punch these to release the ignition coil.

    4

Install the new Cadillac Escalade ignition coil. You can use a universal or stock replacement ignition coil designed to fit your particular engine. When you reassemble the ignition system, use a Torque wrench to tighten the studs to 96 inch pounds (11Nm) torque.
