How to Replace the Ignition Coil in a Nissan Sentra

The Nissian Sentra with a 3.0L engine incorporates a distributorless ignition system (DIS). Models with a 1.6L, 2.0L or a 2.4L engine rely on a distributor ignition system (DI). In both systems, the ignition coil converts the low-voltage battery power to the high-voltage spark that triggers the spark plugs to cause combustion.

Disable the battery's ability to power by removing the negative battery cable, also called the ground cable, from the battery terminal. For added saftey, set your emergency brake.

Detach the engine cover. Be careful not to drop, shock or damage it.

Determine the components that you need to remove in order to replace the Sentra ignition coil. For models with a DI, Nissan recommends you replace the entire distributor, which contains the ignition coil. For DIS cars, the ignition coil mounts directly to the engine.

Disconnect the electrical connectors and the spark plug wires from the distributor or the ignition coil. You may need to remove the distributor cap to see these. Mark the position of any wires or connectors you disconnect; you need to put things back in the proper place in order for your car to work properly.

Release the distributor or the ignition coil from the mounting system. Use a wrench or socket set to loosen and remove the retainers.

Pull out the distributor or the ignition coil and replace it with the new Sentra ignition coil. You can use a stock replacement or a universal ignition coil as long as they work with your specific engine.

Replace any components you removed and reconnect the battery.
