The tailgate cables on your 2000 GMC Sonoma truck may be simple, but they are essential to stabilizing and holding the large, rear flap in place. If one or more of the cables has become broken, frayed or otherwise damaged, you need to replace the cables. They are connected via pins and bolts for relatively simple removal.

Instructions

    1

Open the tailgate and lower it using the latch.

    2

Disconnect the cables from the tailgate and the body, removing their bolts with a wrench and detaching the cable ends from their hinge pins.

    3

Connect the replacement cables onto their hinge pins on the body and the tailgate and apply their bolts.

    4

Close the tailgate and listen for the latch to click into place.
