If all of the air conditioning components are functioning properly, recharging the air conditioning system in your Durango with R134 refrigerant may correct the problem. Keep in mind that in some areas, you have to have a license to purchase refrigerant. In this case, a professional will have to recharge it.

Instructions

Prepare the Air Conditioning System

    1

Look at your air conditioning lines for signs damage. Some auto parts stores have kits that will help you to find leaks in the system and possibly seal small leaks. If you see any visible damage, take your Durango to a professional to repair the leaks before you recharge the system. Find the Low Pressure Side service port. It is located on the line coming out of the compressor. The port is toward the center of the SUV on the passenger side. Remove the black cap marked LOW.

    2

Start your Durango. Turn on the air conditioner. The temperature should be the lowest possible and the fan speed should be on max.

    3

Check the air conditioner pressure using an automotive air conditioner pressure gauge. You can find one at your local auto parts store. Read all of the directions before you use the gauge.

Recharge the System

    4

Read all of the directions on the refill kit. Some kits may have specific directions that you must follow to ensure safe use.

    5

Attach the refill hose to the connector on the Low Pressure Side of the air conditioning system. The Low Pressure Side connector is smaller than the High Pressure Side connector is. Because the connectors are different sizes, the refill kit hose should fit only on the Low Pressure Side port.

    6

Open the valve slowly on the refill hose to allow the refrigerant to enter the air conditioning system. In most cases, you will have to hold the can upright. It may take up to 10 minutes for the can to fully empty.

    7

Repeat steps one and two until the pressure is in the acceptable range. You may need to use more than one can of R134 refrigerant. Make sure that you check the pressure often after the first can of refrigerant.

    8

Close the valve on the refill hose and remove the hose from the connector when you have finished recharging the air conditioning system. Make sure that you put the cap back on the port.

    9

Leave the air conditioner running on the lowest temperature and highest speed for at least 20 minutes. This allows the refrigerant to circulate throughout the entire air conditioning system.
