Like most Toyota models, the Tundra's oil pan doesn't require a traditional cork gasket, but instead, a special sealant is used to keep the pan from leaking. Here is how to change the oil in the popular 2000 Toyota Tundra with a 5VZ-FE engine. If your Toyota Tundra has a 2UZ-FE engine, replacing the oil pan gasket involves removing the engine completely from the vehicle. This is a job for a skilled mechanic.

Instructions

    1

Unhook the negative battery cable and raise the vehicle on to jack stands, using jacks. Be sure it's secure. Block the real wheels of the vehicle to prevent rolling.

    2

Take off the crankshaft timing pulley, then drain the engine oil into a pan. If your Toyota Tundra is a four wheel drive, unhook the front differential. If the vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, take off the oil cooler tube and the clamp.

    3

Dislodge the stiffener plate and take off the dust cover on the flywheel housing. Unhook the clamp on the starter wire and take off the crankshaft sensor.

    4

Unbolt the oil pan, lower it and carefully separate the pan from the cylinder block. Use a thin scraper to scrape old sealing material off the cylinder block and joining surface of the oil pan, being sure that all traces of the old gasket have been removed.

    5

Clean the pan and the joining surfaces of the cylinder block and pan with engine cleaner or solvent and apply a bead of liquid gasket sealer. Put the oil pan in place and replace the nuts and bolts securely, working quickly before the sealer sets up.

    6

Reattach the flywheel housing and dust cover and reinstall the stiffener plate. Reconnect the clamp on the starter wire. If the vehicle has four wheel drive, reinstall the front differential. Replace the undercover on the engine.

    7

Raise the vehicle enough to remove the jack stand and carefully lower it and take it off the jacks. Refill the engine with the appropriate oil and reattach the negative battery cable.
