The driveshaft on your vehicle is a large tube that sends power between the transmission and the differential. It is rare that a driveshaft needs to be replaced, usually only if it has been damaged significantly. Removing and replacing the driveshaft isn't an easy task since the shaft must be properly aligned with the two components it connects to. Please note that the exact process can vary slightly depending on the year, make and model of your vehicle.

    Raise the rear end of the vehicle and support it on jack stands. Block the front wheels, release the parking brake and place the transmission in neutral.

    Place marks on the driveshaft where it connects to the transmission to show the relationship between the two. Use chalk or some form of water-soluble paint. Mark the shaft at the other end to show its relationship with the differential.

    Disconnect the driveshaft from the differential by removing the bolts on the flange with a flare-nut wrench. If the vehicle uses a two-piece driveshaft, remove the mounting bolts for the center support bearing. Remove the bolts connecting the driveshaft to the transmission.

    Lower and remove the driveshaft from the vehicle. Since this is a long and heavy component, it might require an assistant's help.

    Raise the replacement driveshaft into position on the vehicle and install it with the mounting bolts in reverse order of removal. If you can't line up the shaft properly because the differential or transmission has been rotated, rotate one of the wheels to return to the original alignment.

    6

    Lower the vehicle once the driveshaft is secured.
