An oil pump is a necessary tool for the survival of the engine. It keeps the engine components in the Pontiac Bonneville lubricated. Without lubrication, an engine is destroyed. In most cases you don't need to replace an oil pump, but in some cases, such as an engine overhaul, you might want to.

Instructions

Remove the Oil Pump

    1

Utilize an engine support fixture to support the engine to keep you safe while you work. Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the engine drive belts and tensioner assembly.

    2

Remove the drive belt idler pulley and the bracket. If necessary, take off the torque axis mount bracket.

    3

Take off the engine front cover assembly and the oil filter adapter along with its pressure regulator valve and spring.

    4

Finish the removal of the old oil pump by taking the oil pump cover off and removing the inner and outer pump gears.

Install the New Oil Pump

    5

Lubricate the gears on the oil pump with petroleum jelly then install those gears into the pump housing. After you do this, pack the gear cavity with more petroleum jelly.

    6

Install the new oil pump cover for your Pontiac Bonneville by torquing the screws on it to 97 in-lb. Install the oil filter adapter with a new gasket, pressure regulator and spring, torquing the bolts to 11 ft-lb.

    7

Re-install the front cover assembly, the tensioner assembly and the drive belt idler pulley and bracket if you removed them prior to installing the new oil pump.

    8

Put the drive belts back in along with the torque axis mount bracket. Reconnect the negative battery cable and take away the engine support fixture.

    9

Tighten the retaining bolts up to 106 in-lb. and tighten the nuts to 18 ft-lb. Reinstall the oil filter adapter and put the engine cover back on using your wrench to tighten the bolts.

    10

Check to make sure your engine oil level is correct then start the vehicle and check for leaks where you were working.
