The Chevy Camaro has an electric fuel pump so you should ensure that its fuses and relays are working before inspecting it. You may need to clean or replace your fuel pump if your fuel tank is not empty but your engine is still having trouble getting fuel. The Chevy Cobalt comes in a variety of styles and trim levels that can affect the replacement fuel pump you choose.

Instructions

    1

Determine which fuel pump your Chevy Camaro will need. This depends not only on the make and model, but also the engine size and type. Models made from 1967 to 1969 were available in a variety of engine sizes including 3.8 L, 4.0 L, 4.9 L, 5.4 L, 5.7 L, 6.5 L, 6.6 L and 7.0 L.

    2

    Look at engine sizes for additional Camaro models. The second generation Camaro covers the years 1970 to 1981 and was offered with 3.8 L, 4.1 L, 5.7 L, 6.5 L, 6.6 L and 7.4 L engines. The third generation was made from 1982 to 1992 and came with 2.5 L, 2.8 L, 3.1 L, 5.0 L and 5.7 L engines. Models made from 1993 to 2002 had the option of a 3.3 L, 3.8 L or 5.7 L engine.

    3

Prepare your vehicle for fuel pump servicing. Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench, relieve the fuel pressure and drain the tank. Remove the fuel sender assembly and disconnect the feed pipe and return pipe for the fuel in addition to the evaporative emission pipe. Unplug the electrical connectors for the fuel sender.

    4

Pull the strainer off the fuel pump and discard it. Remove the retaining clip for the fuel pressure regulator so that you can remove the fuel pressure regulator. Disconnect the electrical connections for the fuel pumps and the fuel level sensor. Remove the retaining clip for the fuel level sensor and remove the fuel level sensor by squeezing the locking tangs.

    5

Install the new fuel pump using the items included in the kit. Be sure to replace the fuel strainer and lubricate the O-rings on the fuel pressure regulator with clean engine oil.

    6

Complete the installation by reversing these steps. You will need an assistant to support the fuel tank as you attach the retaining straps.
