The Nissan Pathfinder has an anti-lock braking system (ABS) controller that reduces the braking force to any wheel that is rotating significantly more slowly than the others. This helps prevent the brakes from locking in an emergency. If the ABS warning light comes on, you may have a faulty ABS controller, but this does not necessarily make your vehicle unsafe to drive.

Instructions

    1

Determine which ABS controller your Nissan Pathfinder will need. You'll want to be sure the new controller is compatible with your make and model of Pathfinder. The Pathfinder first offered ABS in 1989 and uses an ABS controller that is integrated with the ABS actuator.

    2

Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench and drain the brake fluid into a suitable container. Disconnect the electrical harnesses from the ABS actuator and controller.

    3

Remove the brake lines with a flare nut wrench to prevent damage to the flare nuts and brake tubes. Use caution to avoid splashing brake fluid on painted areas. Unfasten the mounting bolts and retaining bolts with a socket wrench so you can remove the ABS actuator and controller from the vehicle.

    4

Install the new ABS actuator and controller. Use a torque wrench to tighten the mounting bolts to 49 foot pounds and the retaining bolts to 5.2 foot pounds.

    5

Attach the brake lines with a flare nut wrench and connect the electrical harnesses to the ABS actuator and controller. Fill the brake system with new brake fluid and connect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench.

    6

Complete the installation by bleeding the air from the brake system and using a Consult-II scan tool to adjust the position of the steering angle sensor.
