Geo uses two types of ignition systems in the Geo Tracker. Carbureted, Tfi and MFI engines use a distributor system. Other engine types use a distributorless ignition system that uses an ignition coil pack rather than a Tracker ignition coil.

Instructions

    1

Remove the ground cable from the battery and isolate it to prevent an accidental connection, which could cause a fire or electrocute you.

    2

Loosen the screws that connect the wire terminal to the Tracker ignition coil, using a screwdriver. You should see the wire terminal on the distributor. Once loosened, label the positive and negative lead wires as they correspond to the connection points on the ignition coil with masking tape. Then remove the wire terminal.

    3

Pull on the boot of the high-tension coil-to-distributor wire to release it from the terminal tower. If you pull on the wire, you might detach the wire and render it useless.

    4

Support the ignition coil while you unfasten the mounting bolts with a socket or wrench. Then separate the Tracker ignition coil from the mounting system.

    5

Remove the old ignition coil and insert the new one into the mounting system.

    6

Align the mounting system with the fastener holes and secure the mounting system in place. Continue to reassemble the parts by reversing the steps you took to remove the ignition coil.
