Auto Body Tools

A collision or an errant shopping cart can both be reasons for needing a little body work on your car. Auto body repair specialists can fix entire sections of a car or just ding and dents. There are a number of tools used to make these auto body repairs.

Dent Pullers

Dent pullers are used for smaller dents and dings in an auto. Some dent pullers work with a sliding bar and a stud welder. A tiny stud is welded in the middle of the dents. The sliding bar is then pulled sharply several times until the dent pops out. Other dent pullers use a strong suction cup that is stuck to the center of the dent and pulled sharply to pull out the dent.

Fillers

Fillers are products used to fill dented up and ragged sections of a car. They are used only to fill small areas and then sanded and buffed before painting. Fillers can be a mud-type mixture or a fiberglass type. Mud fillers, like Bondo, are mixed and spread over the dented area in a thick, smooth coat. There are also fiberglass fillers that are applied by soaking the fiberglass sheet in a resin and then applying it to the dented area.

Sanders

Sanders are an invaluable tool in the auto body repair business. Sanders are manual or power driven. Sanders are used to sand down the parts of the auto that have been repaired. Power sanders are used to sand larger areas, while manual sanders are used for small and hard-to-reach spots. Various grades of sandpaper are fitted to the sander. The rougher grades of sandpaper are used for deep sanding where many layers of filler or metal need to be removed. The finer grades are used for finishing and buffing auto surfaces.
