How to Replace the Passenger Door Lock on a 2000 Avalon

The passenger door lock on the Toyota Avalon primarily consists of one cylinder installed and connected to the door handle assembly. If replacing this lock, you should also replace the lock on the driver-side door unless you want the extra security of different door locks. You may also simply need to replace a damaged door lock; if so, inspect the door assembly and see whether it also needs replacing.

Instructions

    1

Raise the passenger-side window all the way up, then remove the window crank with a hooked tool or rag on its clip -- or pry off the control plate from the door with a trim stick and disconnect its electrical connector.

    2

Pry out the door lock knob on the door inner panel and the outside mirror trim cover above it. Remove all the panel's screws with a screwdriver, pry the panel off its clips with the trim stick and remove the panel.

    3

Disconnect the rod linking the lock to the door latch, then remove the bolts for the lock and outside handle assembly with a wrench. Remove the clip for the cylinder, and remove the cylinder from the assembly.

    4

Insert the replacement lock cylinder into the door handle assembly, and clip it into place.

    5

Reinstall the door handle assembly with its bolts, and reconnect the link rod for the latch.

    6

Reconnect the door trim panel to the door with its clips and screws, then reconnect the mirror panel, door lock knob and window controls.
