Your Pontiac Grand Prix has an electrically operated engine cooling fan. The procedure to replace the engine fan in a Pontiac Grand Prix is relatively simple compared to conducting the same procedure on many other vehicles, and can be accomplished by a novice, using just a wrench, in about an hour.

Instructions

    1

Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable on your Pontiac Grand Prix to keep the electrically operated engine fan from switching on unexpectedly.

    2

Remove the engine strut brace bolts from the upper tie bar and loosen the other bolts before rotating the strut and brace rearward. You may need to remove the coolant recovery reservoir and/or the air cleaner assembly to create more working space.

    3

Unplug the cooling fan electrical wiring harness, then unbolt and remove the entire fan assembly from the radiator support.

    4

Place the new fan assembly in the engine compartment and install it to the radiator support. Tighten the mounting bolts to 7 foot pounds (9.5 Nm) of torque. Plug the engine cooling fan's electrical connector back in.

    5

Replace the engine strut in its proper position, secure the retaining bolt and tighten the other mounting bolts. Replace the coolant recovery reservoir and/or the air cleaner assembly, if you removed them in Step 2.

    6

Reconnect the negative battery cable. Start your vehicle's engine, let it run up to normal operating temperature and check for proper fan operation. Also, check for coolant leaks.
