A 1998 Chevrolet uses door springs to help support the weight of the door. These springs lose tension as the door is opened and closed over the years, and eventually, the springs will lose enough tension that they can't do their job correctly. Should this happen on your Chevrolet, you can take out the old springs and install new ones, which should take around 15 minutes to do.

Instructions

    1

Open the door as far open as it will go. Put the jack under the edge of the door and lift the jack just enough to contact the door.

    2

Install the door spring compressor around the door spring that's inside of the door jam. Tighten down the door spring compressor using a 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, then pull the compressor and the spring out of the door.

    3

Remove the door spring compressor from the original door spring and reinstall it onto the replacement door spring with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Insert the new door spring in the door and loosen the door spring compressor using the ratchet to set the spring in the door. Lower the jack from the door.
