Sometimes it takes more than just a pair of gloves for the handyman to avoid harmful chemicals. If you plan to work with anything stronger than a household cleaner, and if you're concerned about fumes, you might want to consider purchasing a hazardous materials, or "hazmat" suit, before you start your work. Here's how to find one.

Instructions

Your Route to a Hazmat Suit

    1

Visit a specialty hardware store. Since the weekend handyman does not typically work with heavy chemicals, you're unlikely to find a hazmat suit in a Home Depot or a Lowe's Home Improvement store. If you're looking for a hazmat suit at a retail shop, try a store such as Grainger Industrial Supply, which tend to focus more on heavy duty equipment and less on screwdrivers and paint. Retailers usually have a store locator on their website, so type in your zip code to find a local branch.

    2

Go directly to the source. If you can't find an industrial supply store in your neighborhood, contacting the manufacturer might be the best bet. Tyvek offers an online order form on its website that allows customers to order single suits. Other companies, such as DuPont, do not offer such features, but you might have a chance if you drop a call or email to the company anyway. They might have a list of local suppliers they can give you, if they will not sell you a suit directly.

    3

Check out an online auction. As a last resort, you can find a hazmat suit on Ebay. Though the selection is not extensive, some dealers do offer a handful of hazmat suits for sale through public auction.
