The components of the distributor ignition system on a Mercury Villager vary depending on the year of the model. In 1993 to 1998 models, the distributor houses the spark plug and coil wires. Mercury incorporates the Villager ignition coil as an integral part of the distributor and recommends you replace the entire distributor rather than the ignition coil.

Instructions

    1

Put your safety first. Detach the negative battery cable from the battery terminal. For additional safety, set your emergency or parking brake.

    2

Locate the ignition coil. On Mercury Villagers from 1993 to 1998 that have a 3.0L engine, you will find the Villager ignition coil at the passenger-side front of the engine next to the rocker arm cover. For later models, look for the distributor.

    3

Remove the cap for the distributor and the distributor wiring harness connector.

    4

Make a note of the alignment between the rotor and the distributor housing. Also note where the rotor connects to the cylinder head. You need to reinstall the rotor in the exact position to prevent problems.

    5

Use a wrench or a socket set to detach the distributor from the engine.

    6

Replace the distributor with a new one, which contains the new Villager ignition coil.

    7

Reassemble the car, reversing the steps you took to remove the distributor.
