How to Install a Trunk Lid Strut

Opening the trunk is something most people take for granted, but without a strut or some other form of assistance, a trunk lid won't lift on its own. After all, there's a lot of weight in there, and if one of those struts goes out, lifting your trunk may become incredibly difficult. Fortunately, the struts aren't expensive, nor are they difficult to replace; it just takes some proper safety steps to do it correctly.

Instructions

    1

Pop the trunk using the factory trunk pop, and then lift it up and hold it in place by propping the broom between the trunk and the ground. This will secure the trunk safely and allow you to take off the struts one at a time.

    2

Use the flathead screwdriver to pry off the retaining clips on the ends of the strut. Then pull the strut off of the mounting balls using your hands.

    3

Install the replacement strut in the same orientation as the stock strut, and push it onto the balls until they lock in place. Push the retaining clips back onto the strut, locking it in place.

    4

Repeat this process for the other struts, then remove the broom. The trunk should support itself on its own at this point.
